“Democracy and Its Enemies” – A Camden Conference presentation with Thomas F. Remington

This year’s Camden Conference is focusing on the worldwide retreat from democracy.

In this talk, Thomas Remington will break down what we mean when we speak of democracy, what its core principles are and are not, and why it invites challenges from the extreme right and left. Citing illustrations from history and the present day, Remington will discuss the problem of majority rule and minority rights, whether democracy is compatible with a market economy, and how democracy can strive to achieve social justice.

This presentation is hosted by the Belfast Free Library and offered as a free community event in in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference: “Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective”, February 21-23, 2025 more information at camdenconference.org
