Stephen P. Huyler “Transformed by India” (Watch recorded event)

On August 27, 2025, Camden resident and renowned art historian Stephen P. Huyler launched his memoir “Transformed by India: A Life” at the Rockport Opera House to a packed audience of 240 community members.
Through compelling personal stories and stunning photographs, Stephen shares his remarkable five-decade relationship with India, beginning when he pedaled a bicycle rickshaw across the border as a twenty-year-old in 1971. His presentation reveals how documenting India’s sacred arts and diverse communities—from maharajahs to village artisans—ultimately deepened his appreciation for his Maine community and reinforced his belief in the fundamental kindness found in people everywhere.
Stephen is one of only a handful of Western scholars widely recognized by Indians as accurately conveying their stories without bias. His memoir features a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a preface by Dr. Shashi Tharoor.
The Camden Conference sponsored this event.
