Stephen Harder is Emeritus Professor of Practice of Law at New York University in Shanghai, where from 2016-2026 he taught international law and international investment in developing countries. From 1995 to 2016 he was based in Hong Kong and Shanghai and led the mainland China practice of the global law firm Clifford Chance, serving as counsel to major Chinese financial institutions investing abroad and to international corporations investing in China. From 1986-1995 he was based in New York, Brussels, Warsaw, and Moscow with the global law firm White and Case. In the years immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he advised on Russian and Polish mass privatization programs and Polish sovereign debt negotiations. He has spoken on US China relations at the Mid-coast Forum on Foreign Relations. A Boston native, Stephen lives in Rockport, Maine.
