How Populism Works: Erdogan’s Path To Authoritarianism in Turkey

This talk examines how Turkey’s president Erdoğan’s use of populist discourse and style has helped sustain an authoritarian regime through popular support. It highlights how performative and emotional appeals bolster an autocratic leader’s perceived authenticity, especially when their legitimacy is under threat.

Presenter Senem Aslan is professor of politics at Bates College. She recently completed a book manuscript on populism and the politics of emotions in Turkey. She is the author of Nation-Building in Turkey and Morocco: Governing Kurdish and Berber Dissent published by Cambridge University Press in 2015.
