The Challenges of Asia

24th Annual Camden Conference

The 24th Annual Camden Conference, The Challenges of Asia, took place February 18 -20, 2011. Economically, Asia is rich in natural, as well as human, resources. In 2011, it had the third largest GDP after North America and Europe as a continent, but in terms of purchasing power parity, Asia was leading the world. At the time, Asia was the world’s largest, most populous continent, accounting for 30% of the Earth’s land mass and 60% of its people. But few of Asia’s citizens think of themselves as “Asians.” The concept of Asia —of grouping the region’s diverse cultures and peoples into a single distinct classification— is purely Western. The speakers at this event covered economic, cultural, security, energy, and climate-related topics, and what these meant both for the US and for Asia itself.
