Data Centers in Maine: Balancing Growth, Energy & Community with Rep Melanie Sachs [York]

The York Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Saturday, January 9, at 10:30 a.m.
Data centers are rapidly becoming a major policy issue in Maine and across the country. What does their growth mean for our communities, environment, economy, and future? State Representative Melanie Sachs explores the debate surrounding data center development in Maine, beginning with LD 307, legislation that came close to creating the first statewide temporary moratorium on data centers in the United States. The presentation examines Maine’s current data center landscape and the balance between potential benefits—including investment, tax revenue, jobs, and infrastructure—and concerns about energy and water use, noise, and land use. The program will also explore how the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving demand for data centers, public attitudes toward AI and development, U.S.-China competition, and emerging policy questions at the national, state, and local levels.
