SUMMARY:No Going Back: Europe and America at a Crossroads [Falmouth]
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Memorial Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Saturday December 12\, at 11:00 a.m. \nThe transatlantic relationship has been the cornerstone of global security since 1945. For decades the United States and its European allies stood shoulder to shoulder against external threats\, from Soviet expansionism during the Cold War to Islamist terror attacks on 9/11. But now the relationship is undergoing profound changes and some experts say it is even in danger of collapsing altogether. What is happening and why? And can the relationship be saved? \nPresenter Andrea Stanley Hester is an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine\, where she teaches classes in European history and political science. She is also a former president of both the World Affairs Council of Maine and the Harvard Club in Maine. Andrea was previously an editor/writer for the president of Harvard University and also the administrator of the International Visitors Program in the Office of the University Marshal at Harvard. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Tufts University and a master’s degree in government from the Harvard Extension School. She and her husband\, Chris\, are new empty nesters who live in North Yarmouth with their two cats.

SUMMARY:The Shifting Balance of Soft Power Between the US and China [Camden]
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Tuesday\, December 15\, at 6:30 p.m. \nWith China Outpacing the USA in Soft Power\, what is Maine’s Impact & Responsibility? Combining on-the-ground experience serving as United Nations partnership officer in Beijing with global developments\, presenter Kate Hotchkiss Taylor explores the United States retreat from multilateral engagements and how this creates a leadership vacuum China is filling earlier than its government officials had planned. Taylor will discuss the far-reaching effects this shifting balance of power has on the USA\, China\, and the rest of the world\, including its impacts on our youngest generations. Kate will conclude with an urgent vision for Maine and everywhere: adopting the Child-Lens Investing Framework\, resulting in thriving lives every child deserves – and potential renewed respect for the United States on the global stage. \nKate Hotchkiss Taylor has 40+ years of business\, government and United Nations experience in Asia\, Europe\, North America\, and the Middle East\, including living in China for twelve years. She teaches Mandarin K-12 and Korean at the North Haven Community School and advises companies on impact investing through a child lens. She is also the author of the On Harbor’s Edge series.

SUMMARY:Negotiating our "Triple Planetary Crisis": an Inside View of United Nations' Negotiations on Biodiversity\, Pollution\, and Climate Treaties [Waterville]
DESCRIPTION:The Mid-Maine Global Forum\, in collaboration with the Waterville Public Library\, will host their next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Wednesday\, December 16\, at 12:00 p.m at the Chase Forum (150 Main Street\, Waterville\, Maine 04901). \nThis talk will focus on how environmental policy is formulated and provide an overview of current progress on the ‘Triple Planetary Crises’ of biodiversity loss\, pollution\, and climate change. In particular\, she will share findings from her fieldwork and updates on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction\, Plastics Pollution\, and Climate Change UN negotiations taking place in late 2026 and early 2027. \nPresenter Diana K. Elhard has studied global environmental governance and policy since 2015\, when she conducted research at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s COP21\, where the Paris Accord was agreed. Her current research looks at the governance of international climate finance to better understand how decision-makers understand their work and create international policy through the process of international environmental negotiations. She aims to extend this work on finance and governance frameworks to additional environmental negotiations. At Colby College\, Professor Elhard is in the Environmental Studies Department\, where she teaches courses on international environmental policy\, including global climate policy and plastics policy courses\, and integrates a variety of approaches in her class\, such as comparative policy analysis and political ecology frameworks. Professor Elhard earned her PhD in political science\, with a focus on international relations and methods\, from Northwestern University.

SUMMARY:Data Centers in Maine: Balancing Growth\, Energy & Community with Rep Melanie Sachs [York]
DESCRIPTION:The York Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Saturday\, January 9\, at 10:30 a.m. \nData centers are rapidly becoming a major policy issue in Maine and across the country. What does their growth mean for our communities\, environment\, economy\, and future? State Representative Melanie Sachs explores the debate surrounding data center development in Maine\, beginning with LD 307\, legislation that came close to creating the first statewide temporary moratorium on data centers in the United States. The presentation examines Maine’s current data center landscape and the balance between potential benefits—including investment\, tax revenue\, jobs\, and infrastructure—and concerns about energy and water use\, noise\, and land use. The program will also explore how the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving demand for data centers\, public attitudes toward AI and development\, U.S.-China competition\, and emerging policy questions at the national\, state\, and local levels. \nState Representative Melanie Sachs represents Freeport in the Maine House of Representatives\, where she currently chairs the Joint Standing Committee on Energy\, Utilities and Technology. She has served in the Maine Legislature since 2020 and previously served on the same committee. A longtime Freeport community leader\, Sachs previously served on the Freeport Town Council and as executive director of Freeport Community Services. She is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 25 years of experience in private and nonprofit settings. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Bates College and a master’s degree in Social Science Administration from Case Western Reserve University.
