In addition to China\, he has also lived in Germany and worked for Hebron Academy for nearly a decade before moving to the midcoast with his wife and son.

SUMMARY:Camden Conference to Sponsor Screening of TUTU at Camden International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Conference is proud to sponsor a screening of TUTU\, Sam Pollard’s documentary portrait of Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, at the 2026 Camden International Film Festival. The screening will take place Friday\, September 18 at 8:15 PM at the Strand Theatre in Rockland. \nDirected by Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI\, Citizen Ashe)\, TUTU draws on decades of rare\, intimate footage shot by journalists Roger Friedman and Benny Gool\, who followed the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for the last twenty years of his life. Rather than a conventional cradle-to-grave biography\, the film focuses on how Tutu’s philosophy of non-violent resistance to apartheid shaped a nation and continues to resonate today. As Screen Daily wrote in its review\, Pollard offers “an admirable\, galvanizing\, and incisive portrait of a peaceful ethos.” \nThe film had its world premiere at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival\, where critics praised it as a deeply personal look at a man whose moral courage helped end apartheid and shape South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. \nThis screening reflects the Camden Conference’s mission to foster understanding of critical global issues — and Tutu’s story of principled leadership and reconciliation speaks directly to that mission. \nIndividual screening tickets will be available for purchase starting September 1st. Get your Festival Pass here: pointsnorthinstitute.org/ciff/box-office \nFor more information about the Camden International Film Festival\, visit pointsnorthinstitute.org.

SUMMARY:US Policy in the Middle East: Seven Months into a Four-Week War [Rockland]
DESCRIPTION:The Rockland Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Thursday\, October 1\, at 6 p.m. Despite numerous assurances early on that the conflict with Iran would be a short one\, it has now stretched on for nearly seven months with few signs that there will be a clear and sustainable end to the hostilities. While some aspects of the conflict\, including its duration\, were clearly foreseeable\, others have been less so. Christopher Barr will help to untangle both the predictable and unpredictable knock-on effects of the Trump Administration’s war with Iran by putting it in the context of broader and longer-running conflicts in the Middle East\, including those in Syria\, Lebanon\, and Yemen. He will also discuss the roles played and challenges faced by the Administration and Congress\, as well as US allies and partners and adversaries alike. \nPresenter Christopher Barr is the President of the World Affairs Council of Maine\, supporting the Council’s work to connect Maine and the world through dialogue\, education\, and civic engagement with engaging programming and public diplomacy. Previously\, Chris served on the professional staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2013 to 2025 where he covered the Middle East and North Africa\, Nonproliferation\, International Financial Institutions and Public Diplomacy. Chris lives in Yarmouth with his wife\, two sons and a (mostly) Labrador mix. To learn more about the World Affairs Council of Maine\, go to https://wacmaine.org/ \nThis will be a hybrid event\, held both in-person and online. SUMMARY:On the Brink: A Poetry Session [Cushing]
DESCRIPTION:Image by Vic Goldsmith \nBeyond the American Century: A New World Order? considers a possible end and a new beginning. Poetry has a great deal to say about ends and beginnings and what it means\, both intellectually and emotionally\, to be On the Brink. We look back and forward as the ten selected poems do\, for example “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley and “Praise Song for the Day\,” Elizabeth Alexander’s inaugural poem. At the event\, presenters first read then respond to the poem. Together\, the poems and commentary create a collage of ideas and emotions. There are opportunities for attendees to engage with the poems and the handout [will be] posted on the Camden Conference website and also available at the session. \nEllen Goldsmith initiated the Community Events Poetry Session to bring the insights of poetry to the Conference topic. Her first full-length poetry collection entitled Are We There Yet? (Kelsay Books) follows four earlier chapbooks. Her poems have been published in numerous journals and anthologies. Goldsmith holds an Ed.D. from Teachers College\, Columbia University and is professor emeritus of The City University of New York. She lives in Cushing Maine. \nThe handout for the event is available here as PDF: \nhttps://www.camdenconference.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/On-the-Brink.pdf

SUMMARY:Who Governs the Oceans? The Law of the Sea in a Shifting World Order [Camden]
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Public Library\, as a part of the Camden Conference Community Events Series\, welcomes Ezgi Yildiz for a presentation that traces how the modern law of the sea took shape\, what it has achieved\, and why it now faces growing strain. This event will take place in person only in the Picker Room at 2:30 PM on November 7. For most of history\, the oceans were treated as a lawless frontier. Over the last century that changed. A series of treaties\, culminating in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea\, produced one of the most ambitious experiments in global cooperation ever attempted: shared rules for navigation\, fishing\, resource extraction\, and the peaceful settlement of disputes across the entire planet. This talk traces how the modern law of the sea took shape\, what it has achieved\, and why it now faces growing strain. That strain is in the headlines\, from contested waters in the South China Sea and the Strait of Hormuz\, to piracy off the Somali coast\, to the emerging race for deep-seabed mining. The talk introduces each of these flashpoints and considers what it will take to keep the oceans peaceful\, prosperous\, and healthy in the decades to come. This program will be recorded and posted on the CPL Youtube channel and Camden Conference website. \nPresenter Ezgi Yildiz is an Assistant Professor of Government at Bowdoin College and a Research Associate at the Global Governance Center of the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland. She received her Ph.D. in International Relations and International Law from the Geneva Graduate Institute in Geneva\, Switzerland. She is the author of three books. Between Forbearance and Audacity: The European Court of Human Rights and the Norm against Torture (Cambridge University Press\, 2024) won the Best Book Award from the American Political Science Association’s Human Rights Section and the International Studies Association’s International Law Section\, and received an Honorable Mention for the Chadwick F. SUMMARY:Through Europe's Eyes: European Perceptions of Americans in the Age of Trump
DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Memorial Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Saturday November 14\, at 11:00 a.m. \nWhat do Europeans think of Americans in the age of Donald Trump? While we know a good deal about the negative sentiments they have toward the US\, Trump\, and the US government during this time\, we are far less clear about what they think of Americans – the people themselves. The question is worthwhile: external perceptions of a country’s citizens matter for trade\, geopolitics\, the environment\, culture\, and beyond. When those perceptions take place in the context of the transatlantic relationship – a pillar of the world order – they become especially important. So\, what do Europeans think of Americans? Francesco Duina will discuss the results from an original survey data conducted in 2026 in five countries (Denmark\, Germany\, Italy\, Poland\, and the UK) with nearly 2\,000 respondents to assess Europeans’ opinions of Americans. General questions were followed by specific ones on high-salience topics – such as democracy\, crime\, and artificial intelligence. The discussion will offer space to reflect on what a post-Trump transatlantic relationship might look like. \nFrancesco Duina is Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology and European Studies at Bates College. He has held appointments at Harvard University\, Copenhagen Business School\, and the University of British Columbia. He is the author of seven books.

SUMMARY:No Going Back: Europe and America at a Crossroads [Scarborough]
DESCRIPTION:The Scarborough Public Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Tuesday November 17\, at 6:00 p.m. \nThe transatlantic relationship has been the cornerstone of global security since 1945. For decades the United States and its European allies stood shoulder to shoulder against external threats\, from Soviet expansionism during the Cold War to Islamist terror attacks on 9/11. But now the relationship is undergoing profound changes and some experts say it is even in danger of collapsing altogether. What is happening and why? And can the relationship be saved? \nPresenter Andrea Stanley Hester is an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine\, where she teaches classes in European history and political science. She is a former president of both the World Affairs Council of Maine and the Harvard Club in Maine. Andrea was previously an editor/writer for the president of Harvard University and also the administrator of the International Visitors Program in the Office of the University Marshal at Harvard. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Tufts University and a master’s degree in government from the Harvard Extension School. She and her husband\, Chris\, are new empty nesters who live in North Yarmouth with their two cats. \nThis will be a hybrid event\, held both in-person and online. DESCRIPTION:The Falmouth Memorial Library will host its next Camden Conference Community Event of the season on Saturday December 12\, at 11:00 a.m. \nThe transatlantic relationship has been the cornerstone of global security since 1945. And can the relationship be saved? \nPresenter Andrea Stanley Hester is an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine\, where she teaches classes in European history and political science. She is also a former president of both the World Affairs Council of Maine and the Harvard Club in Maine.
