Witherle Talks: Law and Human Rights in Africa with Alyne Cistone

Attorney Alyne Cistone will give a talk entitled “Law and Human Rights Issues in Africa” on Wednesday, February 3, 4:30-5:30 pm at the Witherle Public Library. She will speak on the role of International Law in the promotion of human rights in Africa, particularly with regard to the rights of girls and women, drawing from personal experience in her native Kenya.This event is free and open to all.

Alyne Kemunto Cistone is a Kenyan born Attorney. She attained her legal education both in Kenya (University of Nairobi, Kenya School of Law) and in the United States (Case Western Reserve University, School of Law, Cleveland, Ohio).

Her Professional career includes previous work at the Constitution Review Commission of Kenya (Nairobi, Kenya), Amnesty International (Washington DC), the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland (Cleveland, Ohio),Visiting Faculty at College of the Atlantic (COA, Bar Harbor, Maine) and Executive Director of Island Housing Trust (Mount Desert, ME). She volunteers for the SPCA, the World Ocean Radio/ World Ocean Observatory and serves on the board of trustees of College of the Atlantic, in Bar Harbor Maine. She currently works at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, Winter Harbor, Maine.

Alyne has an inborn passion for social justice, animal welfare, human rights, oceans and environmental conservation, advancement of education and community development. She resides in Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine with her husband, Joe, son JJ, and daughters Franscesca and Kemy.

This presentation is hosted by the Witherle Memorial Library in Castine and offered as a free community event in in anticipation of the 29th Annual Camden Conference: The New Africa, February 19-21, 2016.
