Violence, Victims, and Healing: How media handles major tragedies

The Camden Conference will present Julie Anderson, Editor-in-Chief for the Sun Sentinel Media Group and Orlando Sentinel Media Group, David Shribman, recently-retired executive editor of The Press Gazette in Pittsburgh, Brian McGrory, editor of The Boston Globe, and our own Peter Imber, former producer for ABC News relating their experiences covering major tragedies. Anderson’s South Florida Sun Sentinel was awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for public service for its impactful coverage of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Schribman’s staff won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Tree of Life massacre, McGrory’s staff won a Pulitzer for its coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombing, and Imber directed coverage of Hurricane Katrina and other disasters. The event, moderated by Megan Gray of the Portland Press Herald, will take place at Hannaford Hall, USM, Portland at 7 pm on October 7.
