The Demise of the Local Newspaper-Tom Groening and Jay Davis at the Belfast Free Library
December 10, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST

At one time Belfast, population about 5,000, had three weekly newspapers, The Republican Journal, The Waldo Independent and Village Soup. Anyone who wanted to understand what was happening in town read both The Republican Journal and The Waldo Independent every Thursday. Those days are over; access to local news is limited in communities all over the country. Why and how did that happen? What does it mean? Jay Davis, founding editor of the Waldo Independent and former editor of The Republican Journal and Tom Groening, twice editor of The Republican Journal, former editorial page editor of the Bangor Daily News and present editor of Working Waterfront, will consider those questions in Belfast on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 6:30 pm in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library as part of the Community Event Series leading up to the Camden Conference, “The Media Revolution: Changing the World” Feb 21-23, 2020.
