Stealing Africa: Why Poverty?
January 22, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST

On Friday, Jan. 22, 6:30 p.m., the Freeport Community Library will stream on large screen the acclaimed 2012 PBS documentary “Stealing Africa: Why Poverty?” This documentary takes an indepth and scrutinzing look at why Zambia, one of the twenty poorest countries in the world, has not reaped the economic benefits of the more than $29 billion in cooper that’s been extracted from the country in the past ten years by internationally owned corporations.
How much profit is fair? Ruschlikon is a village in Switzerland with a very low tax rate and very wealthy residents. But it receives more tax revenue than it can use. This is largely thanks to one resident – Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians. Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed.
This event is organized by the Camden Conference in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Maine. For more information, please contact the Freeport Community Library at freeportlibrary@gmail.com or 207-865-3307.
