With the election of Donald Trump, the success of Brexit, and the recent electoral gains of populist parties in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria, right-wing populist movements are clearly on the rise in the US and in Europe. But what exactly is populism, and why are populist parties so ascendant right now? The answer lies in deep-rooted economic, cultural, and security fears that charismatic populist leaders are able to exploit, offering simple solutions to complex problems.
