PUTIN’S WORLD WAR III (Camden Opera House)

October 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Sergei Medvedev

PUTIN’S WORLD WAR III

Why War in Ukraine Is War on the West

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the biggest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, going on for a year and a half with no end in sight. What were the reasons behind this war? Is it a regional conflict, or Russia’s war on the West and a latent World War III? Sergei Medvedev, a historian, writer, and television and radio host, known for his critical thinking and strong opposition to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, argues that it was not only Putin that started the Ukraine war but Russia itself, seeking to relive its military glory and colonial past.

Dr. Medvedev’s most recent book, A War Made in Russia,  will be released in the U.S. in September. Medvedev tackles important questions, including, Is it possible to end this war without completely defeating Russia, like Germany in 1945?

Dr. Medvedev earned a B.A. from Moscow University, an M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in History at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In the past thirty years, he has taught at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, and many universities across Europe, as well as the Marshall Center for Security Studies in Garmisch, Germany. His previous book, The Return of the Russian Leviathan, was awarded the Pushkin House Book Prize and was translated into 12 languages.

An Arctic enthusiast, Dr. Medvedev spoke at the all-virtual 2021 Camden Conference The Geopolitics of the Arctic; he advocates international control over the region, including a ban on military activity, oil drilling and other economic exploitation. A scholar-athlete, Dr. Medvedev has completed dozens of world marathons, cycling tours, Ironman triathlons, and ultra-distance ski races in Greenland and in Lapland.

Dr. Medvedev also joined the 2022 Camden Conference, EUROPE: Challenged at Home and Abroad, via Zoom from his Moscow apartment and delivered harsh criticisms of Putin and the war – necessitating his speedy exit from Russia to Prague, where he now teaches at the Charles University.

Here’s your chance to see Sergei Medvedev in person at the Camden Opera House! Professor Seth Singleton will moderate the Q&A.

Dr. Medvedev’s books will be available for sale at this event and a book signing will follow his talk, sponsored by Arctic Tern Books.
