WISE – Women’s Initiatives that Strengthen and Empower – in Zambia
February 11, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST
In 2004, the cry for help in the Western Province of Zambia was heard by a small group of women in Maine and the non-profit organization WISE was founded. WISE – Women’s Initiatives that Strengthen and Empower – has since greatly increased the quality of life in Kaoma located in the Western Province of Zambia, Africa. Join WISE Advisory Board Chair Joanne Bollinger on February 11th at 6:30 pm as she talks about her trips to Zambia and presents the story of WISE.
The WISE group sends work teams to Kaoma annually to teach and promote self-sufficiency for poor, displaced and vulnerable residents. They provide scholarships for formal education and training in agricultural, vocational, and social programs. Projects have included family health, clean water projects, agricultural instruction, and basket making as a means to attain an income. The group hopes to build a learning center in the future and expand their vocational programs for women.
With support from the Camden Conference, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Maine, this program is open to the public and will take place in the Androscoggin Community Room.
