Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project

November 16, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST

The Scarborough Public Library hosts Susan Roche, Esq., Executive Director for the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project on November 16 at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to all.

ILAP is Maine’s only statewide nonprofit legal aid agency dedicated to providing the information, advocacy, and individualized legal help with immigration law and related issues that low-income Maine residents need. With ILAP’s expert assistance, clients improve their immigration status, gain safety from persecution or domestic violence, and unify or stay together with their families.

ILAP’s services include direct legal aid provided for free or low-fee, educational outreach for immigrant communities, service providers, and the general public regarding immigration laws and immigration policies, and systemic advocacy to address laws and policies affecting large numbers of Maine’s immigrants. Our advocacy work is often undertaken in coalition with our Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition (MIRC) partners.

Sue joined ILAP as a Staff Attorney in August 2000 and has acted as Interim Executive Director in addition to overseeing the legal department since May 2013. In November 2013, ILAP’s Board of Directors appointed her as Executive Director. She graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 2000. She is an expert on family based immigration, remedies for noncitizen domestic violence and crime victims, and removal defense, and has been an invited presenter at regional and national conferences of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. She is admitted to the Maine Bar and is fluent in Spanish.

This presentation is hosted by the Scarborough Public Library and offered as a free community event in in anticipation of the 30th Annual Camden Conference -Refugees and Global Migration: Humanity’s Crisis, February 17-19, 2017. The 30th Anniversary Camden Conference Community Events Series is supported in part by the Maine Humanities Council.
