Facing Maine’s Demographic Challenges: The Fate of the Nation’s Oldest State–Charles Lawton

The Camden Conference presents Charles Lawton on Thursday, December 7 at 6:30 pm at the Rockland Public Library. His talk is titled Facing Maine’s Demographic Challenges: The Fate of the Nation’s Oldest State. This event is free and open to all.
Maine is the “oldest” state in the nation, as measured by median age. Maine’s “lead” in this metric has been increasing. This talk is intended to present the basic demographic data—both for Maine alone and how Maine compares to other states and the national average—and to explore the implications of our changing demographic structure for the state’s economy, health care, education and taxes.
Lawton is chief economist at Planning Decisions. He specializes in economic policy, fiscal impact studies, smart growth and economic development studies. He has worked in private business, in state government and was a professor at the University of Maine at Farmington. He holds a Ph.D. degree from The Fletcher School at Tufts University and writes a weekly column on the Maine economy for the Maine Sunday Telegram.
