Trump, the Swamp, and the collapse of American foreign policy–Seth Singleton
January 16, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST

The Camden Conference presents Seth Singleton at the Bangor Public Library on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30 pm. Singleton will give a talk titled “America First? Trump, the Swamp, and the collapse of American foreign policy.” This event is free and open to all.
In Washington, President Trump and loyalists who share his America First worldview battle the Establishment and its inherited assumption of a foreign policy based on “American world leadership.” The result, so far, has been mostly incoherence and actions that cut the United States adrift from the rest of the world. Other nations, friends and enemies alike, watch with amazement, confusion, disdain, and fear as they scramble to minimize disruption and gain advantage. We will look at United States relations with Europe, Russia, China, and our neighbors Canada and Mexico, and ask if, in present circumstances, a coherent foreign policy is possible, and what it might look like.
Seth Singleton teaches international relations in the School of Policy and International Affairs at the University of Maine. He received his B.A. at Harvard, in Russian History and Literature, and his Ph.D. at Yale, in Political Science. He has lived in Tanzania, Russia, Ecuador, and Vietnam, and consulted in China, Mongolia, and Bolivia. He has been faculty research associate at Harvard and academic dean in universities in the US and overseas. Teaching is what he most enjoys, and he appreciates Maine students for their intelligence, curiosity, open-mindedness, ambition, and insistence on making the world a better place.
This presentation is hosted by the Bangor Public Library and offered as a free community event in in anticipation of the 31st Annual Camden Conference –New World Disorder and America’s Future, February 16-18, 2018.
