Colby College Professor to speak in Belfast on Russian Women Authors

Professor Julie de Sherbinin will speak on  “Russian Women Authors: Writing in the  Shadow of Patriarchy” on Tuesday, January 13 at the Belfast Free Library. This event takes place from 6:30-8:00 pm and is free and open to all.

Julie de Sherbinin (Department of German and Russian, Colby College) was the co-founder of the North American Chekhov Society and served as editor of the NACS Bulletin, a biannual scholarly newsletter, from 1992-2000. She edited issues on Chekhov and film (1999) and Chekhov in translation (2000) that have become reference points for Chekhov scholars. She has delivered papers at seven international Chekhov conferences and published five articles on Chekhov. In her monograph Chekhov and Russian Religious Culture: The Poetics of the Marian Paradiam (Northwestern UP, 1997), she identifies Chekhov as a literary ethnographer with profound understanding of the cultural psychology behind Russian Orthodoxy, who makes subtle and systematic use of its constructs in his narratives.

This presentation is hosted by the Belfast Free Library and offered as a free community event in anticipation of the 28th Annual Camden Conference: Russia Resurgent, February 20-22, 2015.

The mission of the Camden Conference is to foster informed discourse on world issues. For more information, visit www.camdenconference.org, email [email protected], or call 207-236-1034.
